The Politics of George Orwell As Seen In His Novel,
“Animal farm”

“Animal Farm” is one of Orwell’s fantasy novels. This novel told about the animals in Moonar farm who felt oppressed by human. Cause of that, they made struggling to their owner, Mr. Jones. Many children love a story like that. Actually, it is not only enough as a story to entertain ourselves, but also as the leanness to people. Because when I read this novel, I feel it is like the representation of human life, exactly in politics world.
After I read this novel, I also read the background of this story in introduction begin from xi page until xxiii page delivered by Julian Symons (died in 1994, was a biographer include Thomas Carlyli: the Life and Ideas of a Prophet, The General Strike and the Detective Story in Britain. He was also a well-known crime novelist). In fact, my guess is true. Animal Farm’s Orwell is as a satire on the Soviet Union which retold the incidents before and after of period of Russian Empire. I don’t know much about it, and it is also was discussed in introduction of this novel. So I want to connected it to our country which also as the satire to Indonesians government.
In my analysis of Animal Farm novel, I divided it into seven parts. They are; oppressions period, awareness period, rebellion period, victory period, development period, dissension period, and final falling down period.
Firstly, oppressions period which happened in Mr. Jones’s Mooner Farm where the animals such pigs, cocks, horse, cows, ducks, goats, dogs, birds, donkeys, cats, etc. felt oppressed by human. Because they have to work hardly everyday, even though they just get a little food and whatever they resulted, it is dish for Mr. Jones. Like cow’s milk, hen’s cock, pig’s wool, goat’s wool, duck’s egg, etc.. So the animals didn’t get anything. It looks like the oppression in our country, animals as the resident who forced to work without payment, and human as the colonist who carry away our country richness.
One day, there is the old pig named Old Mayor which was conscious that they were colonized by human. Then, he told his idea to other animal, but three days after he shared his idea, he found in his bed was died. It is started of the awareness period. After he died, Snowball and Napoleon cooperate to continue Old Mayor’s struggle to fighting human. Snowball and Napoleon made a meeting with other animals to discuss their strategies to chase human from Mooner Farm. It is happened in our country in pass too. Soekarno, Soeharto and his friends made a meeting with an intellectual people also to discuss Indonesian condition that colonized by colonist. What they have to do to reach freedom.
Next period is rebellion period. When all of animals in the farm are hunger, they attack the human when were relax accidently. After that, the human run off from farm. Mooner Farm changed by animals became Animal Farm. Then, they have to manage the farm alone. It is same with Indonesian condition when seized the freedom. Suddenly, Soekarno proclaimed the freedom of Indonesian which support by Indonesian’s younger, when Japanese defeated by their partner, USA. Indonesian doesn’t ignore this chance, and as soon as proclaim the Indonesian freedom.
Indonesian was freedom, but not really freedom. In beginning, the government said about fairness. There is no differentiating between human lives. But in the reality, there is still differentiate. The rich become richer, and the poor become poorer. It is like Animal Farm story. Before the animals got freedom, they made agreement called Animalism. There is seven agreements, one of them is all animals are equal. But in fact, the pigs and the dogs deemed as bourgeois who smart and hold the power in Animal Farm, such Snowball, Napoleon and seven his bodyguard dogs. And other animals are proletariat.
Then in a meeting, for developing the Animal Farm, Snowball wanted to build windmill. But Napoleon does not agree with his idea, because Napoleon though it is not too important today. It is become dissension period. Some of animals agree with Snowball idea, but almost all of the animals most agree with Napoleon Idea. So, Snowball has to go out from Animal Farm. But some of the animals who agree with his idea keep stay in Animal Farm to spy Napoleon do. Next day, Napoleon said to other animals that actually build the windmill is his idea; snowball was stealing it from him. And Indonesian politics world also happened the lying like that. For the hegemony and richness, they do anything to get it, include lying, treason, and slander to defeat their opposite.
In fact, everything they said and effort is not showed the result. There are only the sweet words, but no anything in reality. So, the leader of Animal Farm is representative of a dictator leader. Like Soeharto in Indonesia, Mao Zedong, Fedel Castro, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, Augusto Pinochet, Slobodan Milosevic, etc. .
